Meeting on the proposal of the Firearms Directive

After the fourth informal inter-institutional meeting on the proposal of the Firearms Directive, MEP Dita Charanzova, the ALDE Group shadow rapporteur has made a following statement:

In our view there was no final political agreement reached yesterday between the European Parliament´s, Council and the European Commission.

The ALDE Group position on the Firearms Directive is to aim at improving security in Europe through marking and tracing, secure deactivation standards, clear rules for authorizations and better exchange of information. At the same time, we have been very clear this should not come at the expense of legal gun holders. I regret that such an important piece of legislation was politicized and that the European Commission was not able to come up with an impact assessment in order to base their proposal on facts.
